Lawyer puts Giles' requests on record

Mar. 12—EBENSBURG, Pa. — Brian Bradley Giles appeared before Cambria County Judge Tamara Bernstein Monday for a status conference regarding the homicide case in which he is facing trial.

The purpose of the proceeding was for Giles' court-appointed lawyer, Timothy Burns, to put his client's requests on the record.

Burns said Giles wants the transcripts of all court proceedings before Burns and fellow court-appointed attorney David Weaver took over the case.

Giles is accused in the 2018 slaying of his wife, Nancy Giles, who went missing in October 2018. Her body was found months later near a hillside trial in downtown Johnstown.

The defendant also requested the discovery for the case be delivered to him again, although Burns said his client refuses to accept mail from the attorneys at Cambria County Prison, where he's being held.

Bernstein also advised Giles of his rights regarding letters he's writing.

She said the defendant has penned several letters to the district attorney's office and others, and wanted to make sure he understood that anything in that mail, if deemed applicable, could be used in the case.

The judge said she couldn't tell Giles what to do, but wanted to make sure he understood the situation. He said he did.

Giles was scheduled for a jury trial in March, but the trial was postponed due to a necessary report not being complete prior to the proceedings.
