Lawrence Police Department arrest suspect in fatal shooting

Update: Antawin Williams was sentenced to 50.5 years Oct. 16, 2023 after being convicted of murder, resisting law enforcement and carrying a handgun without a license in the January 2021 shooting death of George Oakley, according to a news release from the Marion County Prosecutor's Office sent on Sept. 19, 2023.

Corrections & Clarifications: The Lawrence Police Department initially reported that the suspect and victim were related. Police later clarified the men knew each other and were staying at the same residence, but they are not related.

Previous reporting: Lawrence Police have preliminarily charged Antawin Williams, 31, with murder, after a 70-year-old man died from gunshot wounds, according to.

The victim, George Oakley, was taken to the hospital Jan. 15, 2021 and died shortly after he arrived, police said.

Around 4 p.m. police were called to a report of a person shot at the residence.

Police said the shooting was the result of an ongoing argument between Williams and Oakley.
