Lawmakers propose tightened security around the Capitol

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (NEXSTAR) — A bipartisan group of lawmakers wants the state to beef up security around the Capitol Complex.

In the past few months, the Capitol has been both locked down and evacuated on three separate occasions due to threats that are called in.

This group of lawmakers wants to see the state put new screening devices at all entrances, put up license plate readers around the grounds and put in ID verification checkpoints at secure parts of the building. On top of all of that, they also want to see an increase in security cameras on the grounds.

“If we have cameras, we will be able to identify people better. We will know who people are coming in. If there is an incident, you will be able to see who was doing what,” Rep. John Cabello (R-Rockford) said. “But also, if you have cameras outside, and someone monitoring them, you may be able to see something doing something before they even get into the capitol.”

The Secretary of State oversees security at the Capitol. A spokesperson for the office said they currently have no comment on the bill, which has not been called in committee yet.
