When Laverne Cox first burst onto the pop culture scene through her role as Sophia Burset on the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black, — becoming the first trans woman of color to have a leading role in a mainstream TV series — the timing was perfect, thanks to a rise in transgender visibility that Cox soon became a major part of. But, as she tells Zac Posen in the premiere episode of Yahoo Lifestyle’s new “Loud and Clear” video series (above), her heralded arrival had been a long time coming.
