Laura Biancone named interim director of LGBT Center of Greater Reading

May 17—Laura Biancone has been appointed interim director of the LGBT Center of Greater Reading, the center's board of directors announced Thursday.

Biancone will be responsible for leading and guiding all aspects of the organization's critical functions including board relations, philanthropy, staff development, client services and community advocacy, as well as partnering with key community leaders and partners to further integrate the center as a force for change, equity and inclusion at the local, state and national levels, center officials said.

"The Board is thrilled to name Laura as our interim executive director," Anita Matson, board chair, said in a news release.

Biancone last served as a key leader in the center's advocacy outreach, Matson said, and is familiar with the center's daily operations and strategic goals.

"(She is) passionate in her unwavering support to drive positive change and help all feel included and accepted," Matson said, noting Biancone, who is the mother of an LGBT individual, champions the rights and dignity of all individuals.

Biancone is currently pursuing a degree in social work at Millersville University, Millersville, Lancaster County.

"I want people to know that I am a fierce advocate for the marginalized and feel so fortunate to be surrounded by an exceptional group of people at the center: staff, board, regional leaders and community supporters," Biancone said in a statement.

Matson said Biancone's leadership and intense focus on the center's core mission and community will keep the center on a forward trajectory.

"We are very committed to building a more welcoming and inclusive environment throughout Berks County and the Greater Reading area," Matson said.

Biancone replaces former director Michelle Dech, who led the center since 2018.

"Michelle Dech is no longer with the center," Matson said, "and we wish her well in her future endeavors."
