Dear FLORIDA TODAY Subscribers,

It's Launch Day!

SpaceX is poised to launch the first fully private crew to the International Space Station at 11:17 a.m.

You can find more information on today's launch and the crew here in Jamie Groh's story.

One of my favorite parts of writing this newsletter each week is giving you - our subscribers - the opportunity to get to know some of the reporters behind the stories and this week, I wanted to introduce you to Jamie.

While she's one of the most recent additions to the FLORIDA TODAY space team, she is anything but a noob when it comes to Florida or space.

"My parents regularly brought my brother and I to Titusville from West Palm Beach to see launches in person from a very young age," she said via email this week. "My first ever rocket launch experience was when I was 8 months old."

Her story resonated with me. My late father introduced me to Brevard County and the space industry during a family vacation to Satellite Beach. It instilled in me a passion for space exploration and astronomy that I've carried since the age of 7.

Jamie says her favorite part of the job so far has been interacting with the scientists and professionals that keep our space program and science missions going.

"They’re always so passionate about what they do and they make it a fun experience to talk to and learn about what they’re doing."

But today, it's Jamie's passion that I look forward to seeing as she takes the lead on our live coverage of the SpaceX Axiom-1 launch.

"I will be working with our entire space team to provide live coverage of the launch, as well as, all following events for the remainder of the mission," Jamie said. "Look for our live blog and follow up post-launch article on launch day and continuing coverage of docking with the ISS on Saturday."

Live coverage of the launch begins at 8:30 a.m. on floridatoday.com/space.
