With latest property purchase, Brunswick city 'busting at the seams' set to expand services

The parks and recreation department in Boiling Spring Lakes finally has an option for growth as the city moves forward with the purchase of a golf course clubhouse tract.

The Boiling Spring Lakes Board of Commissioners approved a resolution authorizing the $550,000 purchase in February. The 3.23-acre golf course clubhouse tract is located at 591 S. Shore Drive.

Steve White purchased The Lakes Country Club in 2001 and operated it until he sold the golf course in October 2021. The clubhouse and golf course are located on two separate parcels of land, so when White sold the course property, he retained ownership of the clubhouse parcel.

Boiling Spring Lakes Mayor Jeff Winecoff said this purchase will provide an option for expanding the city’s parks and recreation department. The Boiling Spring Lakes Community Center – located at 1 Leeds Road – is unable to expand, Winecoff said, due to a septic tank system on the property.

“We’re busting at the seams with libraries, we’re busting at the seams with parks and recreation community buildings, and the whole idea was to look to the future,” Winecoff said. “That’s what this board is concentrated on, looking to the future with the city gonna be growing, and we all know it’s gonna grow.”

Winecoff said the city has had its eye on the property for a number of years. A park, swimming pool, pickleball courts, boat ramp, event center and more are possibly in the property’s future, Winecoff added.

White told the StarNews last year that the clubhouse itself would likely need to be torn down by the next owner, as it was damaged by the strong winds brought by Hurricane Florence in 2018.

According to Brunswick County tax records, DHLN Holdings LLC is the owner of The Lakes Golf Course. Last year, the company began clearing land on the golf course parcel to build a clubhouse on the site.

According to the purchase agreement for the clubhouse parcel, the city has 180 days to arrange financing for the property. The down payment of $75,000 will be paid using money allocated for and left over from a property purchase in 2023.
