Authorities say the Honolulu medical examiner's office has taken human remains from a Waikiki apartment after a man told police he killed his mother.

Police Lt. Phillip Lavarias said authorities executed a search warrant Wednesday and found the remains. He said it was not clear when the death occurred, but the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported the man's mother had been dead a year.

Police records show 26-year-old Yu Wei Gong was arrested on suspicion of murder. He has not yet been charged.

Lavarias says the man called 911 Tuesday and told arriving officers he had killed his mother.

Julio Gleske, who lives one floor below the unit where the remains were found, says residents of the building don't know each other well.
