Latest Headlines | RTD to move bus stops from Coffman Street to Bross Street

May 22—Starting Sunday, RTD will move its bus stops at Eighth Avenue and Coffman Street to Eighth Avenue and Bross Street, on the west side of Roosevelt Park as part of a two-year Coffman Street mobility improvements project.

When all is said and done, the mobility improvements project is expected to lead to a planned future transit hub estimated to cost up to $53.9 million at a First Avenue and Main Street Station to the south. Plans for the improvements and the new transit hub have been in the works since 2017 and earlier, when the first estimates were made for a station that would serve a future planned RTD Northwest Rail Line.

In the meantime, the current mobility improvements project extends from First Avenue to Ninth Avenue and will offer public transit, bicycle connections to and from downtown and wider spaces for pedestrians, according to the city's website.

The temporary bus stops are expected to remain in place until May 2027. When the project wraps up, officials plan to move the existing Eighth Avenue and Coffman Street transit station to the First Avenue and Main Street Station, according to information on the city's website.

The temporary stops on Eighth Avenue and Bross Street will serve the following routes — BOLT, LD1, LD3, 323, 324, 326 and 327.

"The temporary stops on Bross will not have shelters installed; just poles with flags," Pauline Haberman, RTD project manager, said in an email.

The RTD Park-n-Ride lot at Eighth Avenue and Coffman Street will remain open.

To reach the temporary stops on Bross Street from Eighth Avenue and Coffman Street, riders should walk west through the Park-n-Ride and along the pedestrian path.

"We will have information at Coffman Street, and hopefully some people to help guide customers during the first week, but we want to be sure to prepare everyone as best we can in advance," Haberman said.

Longmont Transportation Planning Manager Phil Greenwald indicated that the city would likely be signing the east side of Bross Street as "no parking" to keep it clear for the buses.

"Our public works group has added concrete bus ramps on the west side of the park to accommodate ADA accessibility for the bus riders," Greenwald said in an email.

Longmont officials will host an open house from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 30, at the Longmont Senior Center, Rooms D and E, 910 Longs Peak Ave, about the Coffman Street mobility improvements, the Hotel Longmont, the planned First and Main Transit Station and the Safety & Justice Center renovations.
