The Last of Us star Melanie Lynskey’s new drama The Tattooist of Auschwitz has released a teaser trailer.

The Sky and Peacock Original series was announced in March last year, and has now released a first look at what viewers can expect when it airs in May.

Inspired by a real-life story and based on the bestselling novel by Heather Morris, the six-part series is set at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp during World War Two.

The story follows Jewish prisoner of war Lale Sokolov, whose job is to tattoo identification numbers on to the arms of his fellow prisoners.

Everything changes when he tattoos a young woman called Gita, and the pair fall in love.

Sky describes the show as a "courageous, unforgettable and human story, told through one man’s memory and experience of Auschwitz-Birkenau; a tale of the very best of humanity in the very worst of circumstances."

While the novel was purely from the perspective of Lale, the screen adaptation sees Lynskey play author Morris, who interviews Lale decades on.

The new trailer shows how the series will flip between Lale’s experience of Auschwitz and the conversations between his older self and Morris as he tells her his story.

Alongside Lynskey, best known for her roles in The Last of Us and Yellowjackets, Jonah Hauer-King (The Little Mermaid) stars as Lale, with Anna Próchniak (Baptiste) as Gita.

Academy Award nominee Harvey Keitel (The Irishman) will portray Lale in the modern day, while Jonas Nay will play Nazi officer Stefan Baretzki.

When the adaptation was announced last year, Lynskey said: "After the horrors experienced at Auschwitz-Birkenau, the continuation of Lale and Gita Sokolov’s story is finding their new home. It was years later in Australia Lale felt comfortable to share his story with New Zealand author Heather Morris.

"As a New Zealand storyteller in my own way, it is a privilege to be a part of the furthering of Lale and Gita’s heartbreaking, yet heart-warming story."

The Tattooist of Auschwitz will be available on Sky on May 2.
