Warning: this article contains spoilers from Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Given that he is not your average moustache-twirling baddie, Kylo Ren is one of the most interesting characters in the new Star Wars trilogy.

Ben Solo is no doubt a conflicted soul, made all the more pertinent after he kills his own father Han Solo.

Yet a new theory suggests that beneath all those angry outbursts and glimpses of redemption, he may in fact be more of an evil genius.

According to one theory on Reddit, Kylo's sudden elevation to Supreme Leader by the end of The Last Jedi may have been all his planning rather than an act of fate. Hear us out.

The theory explains: "At the beginning of the film in the throne room, Snoke tells Ren that he keeps Hux because his weakness (properly manipulated) becomes Snoke's strength.

"He then proceeds to berate Ren who tries to make a move, only to be blasted off his ass by Snoke and nearly attacked by the Praetorian guards. It's here that Kylo realises his father was right, and Snoke will dispose of him when he's finished his conquest.

"It's also here that Kylo decides to kill the Supreme Leader, but realizes that he can't take down Snoke alone. Even if he could somehow overcome him, the Praetorian guards would end him after committing the deed. He needs help."

From this point, Kylo realises that the force bond created between himself and Rey by Snoke could be used to his own advantage, manipulating her search for her parents as her "weakness" to help him.

In the end, it works, as Rey leaves Luke to find Kylo in the hope of returning him to the light.

"Kylo captures her and says that he knows who her parents are," the Redditor continues. "All of the pieces are now in place for a coup. He knows Snoke is overconfident and will underestimate them both.

"Kylo also has nurtured Rey's dependency for him and has something to offer her if she helps him.

"Turning Snoke's and Rey's weaknesses into his strengths, Kylo kills Snoke, the guards, and assumes the role of Supreme Leader. The only thing that didn't go to plan was that Rey didn't join him, but he still came out ahead."

It looks like he used Snoke's teachings and outwitted the former Supreme Leader by using them against him. Pretty damn clever, eh?

It certainly proves that Kylo will be a true force to be reckoned with in Episode IX – though we will have to wait until 2019 to see if he can outwit the growing Resistance.
