Last Jedi director justifies his big final twist

(Warning: Contains spoilers for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. But everyone's seen it by now, right?)

One of the complaints levelled at Star Wars: The Last Jedi relates to the movie's final showdown.

In the movie, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) confronts his former pupil Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), but is eventually revealed to be a projection, with Luke actually meditating on the distant planet Ahch-To.

His goal achieved, Luke awakens, only to fade away like his Jedi masters before him.

One complaint has been that Rian Johnson made up new ways to use the Force to fill in the gaps in his story, but the writer-director has something to show you (via The Mary Sue).

The book he is holding is The Jedi Path, which was first published in 2010 and describes the different Force abilities that a Jedi can master. It doesn't seem to be canon anymore, but it shows that the projection ability pre-dated Johnson joining the Star Wars universe.

The now defunct 'Star Wars Expanded Universe' (now known as 'Star Wars Legends') also told a story of how Luke's nephew (and one of Leia and Han's children) turned to the dark side, much like the story of Ren. One popular story – the comic Dark Empire – centred around the time Luke became the apprentice of the resurrected Emperor Palpatine. Just saying...
