At last, Instagram is finally coming to Android
Hipsters, rejoice! The popular photo-sharing, vintage-filtering iPhone camera app Instagram is finally coming to Android.
On Sunday at SXSW, Instagram’s co-founder Kevin Systrom announced that the company is nearing the final development process of the app’s Android version, and teased the beta version on stage without providing a walkthrough or demo. According to TechCrunch‘s reports, Systrom “waved it around briefly on-stage” and says the app will be available on Google Play “very soon.”
“In some ways, it’s better than our iOS app. It’s crazy,” Systrom said, and continued on to note how the team is working to make the Android version of Instagram fast and “one of the best Android apps you’ll ever see.”
Though it has been one and a half year since Instagram first premiered on the iPhone, the co-founder believes it wasn’t too long of a wait before the company moved on to developing the Android version.
“I don’t think it took us so long. We just had priorities,” Systrom said. “Had we tried to be both on Android and iPhone at the same time, it would’ve been tough to innovate in the way that we have.”
Instagram also announced that it has surpassed 27 million registered users on the iOS platform, with 67 percent of those members still actively using the app by the time of Systrom’s announcement. He compares the usage and engagement level to that of Facebook’s, and despite the quick rise to fame, the company plans to continue building the app and photo-sharing site for a long term success.
Will Instagram be the new Twitter? By June of 2011, Twitter garnered more than 350 million users after its launch in 2006. If developers keep introducing Instagram to new platforms, it is likely that the app can draw in 100 million users in the next few years.
