Last chance: Montgomery County Board of Education seeks policy input

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — Wednesday is the last day community members can weigh in on two of the Montgomery County Board of Education’s policies.

The Board has drafted amendments to Montgomery County Public Schools’ (MCPS) “Homework” policy, updating its priorities for homework assigned to students. The revisions provide guidance for homework practices that are consistent with the academic, social-emotional and physical development of students, according to the Board’s drafted policy.

The amendments also aim to ensure that homework is purposeful and relates directly to what students are learning in class.

The Board has also drafted its “Board Appointment of MCPS Leaders” policy. This is a new policy that aims to ensure decisions are effective and well-informed regarding candidates for MCPS leadership.

The policy would establish criteria for leadership positions, require a thorough vetting of prospective candidates and affirm that leaders are appointed in a timely manner.

MCPS leaders, the policy states, should reflect the diversity of the community and remain committed to the success of all students and staff.
