Las Vegas valley residents cleaning up after strong winds over weekend

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Over 60 mph winds wreaked havoc on the Las Vegas valley over the weekend, leaving residents and landscaping businesses cleaning up the mess left behind.

Susan Moskos has lived in Sun City Summerlin for over 20 years but has never seen wind damage like this before.

“Heard a big loud noise but I didn’t hear glass breaking or anything like that. Wasn’t going out in the middle of the wind to find out and this morning this is what we found,” Moskos explained waking to find her neighbor’s patio awning now stuck in her yard. “My chairs are 25 years old and they’re holding up and they’re holding that up.”

Sixty-five mile per hour wind gusts were strong enough to carry patio furniture, cause power outages and uproot trees. Due to all of the damage and debris, Monday morning was an early work day for those at Center Cut Landscaping.

Business developer Kyle Henderson said they are looking at 15 cleanup calls across their various properties in the valley. However, she said they had been prepared.

“Oh man, on a weekend we never get called so to have our phones ringing 5 to 6 times yesterday alone, it was special,” Henderson said. “Our guys are working tirelessly around the clock, been working since yesterday.”

Chief Operating Officer Matthew Quispe said it would take several hours to haul out a large pine tree but there are preventative measures like hardwood pruning, which allows for better wind flow and structure.

“If you don’t do the hardwood pruning you end up with issues like this inevitably,” Quispe said. “Anytime in the winter when you get cooler months, that’s the best time to prune especially pine trees.”

Meanwhile, other damage might take longer to clean up.

“We’re very grateful no one was hurt, nothing on the house was hurt and this is one of the joys of living in Las Vegas,” Moskos said.
