Las Vegas teen dead after shooting over stolen marijuana pens

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A Las Vegas teen is dead and another was injured following a shooting over stolen marijuana pens, according to police documents obtained by 8 News Now.

Shortly after 4 p.m. on April 1, officers with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department received a report of a shooting in the 4400 block of Escondido Street.

Arriving officers found a 14-year-old boy in front of the apartment complex with a gunshot wound to the head. Medical personnel took the teenager to a nearby hospital, where a doctor advised police that his injury was not survivable, the report stated.

Officers at the apartment complex found another teenage boy with a gunshot wound in his left arm inside an apartment at the complex. Medical personnel took him to a local hospital.

Police learned the suspect was driving a light blue Ford Mustang. A records check showed the vehicle was registered to the father of the suspect, who told police the vehicle was only driven by his son, identified as Lucas Murphy.

A third teen boy told police that the two victims stayed at his apartment the night before and on the afternoon of April 1, the three agreed to contact a seller about marijuana pens.

The three contacted a person they later identified as Murphy and agreed to pay $70 for three pens. Two of the teens told police they did not have the money to pay for them and planned to steal the pens, according to the report.

The three left the apartment to meet up with Murphy. He handed one of the teens the pens and had a payment app pulled up on his phone. The teens grabbed the pens and ran back to the apartment. While running away, one of the teens told police he heard two gunshots.

When two of the teens got back to the apartment, they began to clean the wound of the one who was shot in the arm and realized the third teen was not with them, according to the report.

The teens told police they did not know what happened to the pens.

Detectives set up surveillance at Murphy’s home and later took him into custody. Murphy originally agreed to speak with police, but later said he wanted his mom or a lawyer present.

Murphy faces felony charges of open murder, two counts of attempted murder, battery with the use of a deadly weapon resulting in substantial bodily harm, or discharging a gun into an occupied structure.

Murphy made bail and was released on high level electronic monitoring. He is due in court on July 24.
