LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Metro police arrested a member of Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo’s security detail on a DUI charge after a crash Friday, the 8 News Now Investigators have learned.

Kevin Bonilla, 28, faces a misdemeanor DUI charge, records said. A preliminary breath test showed he had a blood-alcohol level of 0.144, documents said. The legal limit in Nevada is 0.08.

It was unclear Monday what Bonilla’s specific role was on the detail, though the Dignitary Protection Detail is “tasked with conducting close-proximity protection and transporting the Nevada Governor, first family and/or assigned dignitaries,” state documents said.

Two spokespeople for the Department of Public Safety and Lombardo said Bonilla was a Nevada State Police Parole and Probation officer assigned to the security detail. He was off-duty and in a personal vehicle at the time of the crash, they confirmed.

On Friday around 6 p.m., a Metro police officer responded to a crash involving three vehicles near Blue Diamond Road and El Capitan Way in the southwest valley, documents said.

Witnesses told police they saw the driver of a black Dodge Ram, later identified as Bonilla, driving around 70 mph and running a red light before the crash.

While speaking with officers, Bonilla said he was coming back from work and headed home, documents said. Bonilla later said he had an alcoholic beverage earlier in the day and was actually coming from a grocery store, documents said.

While waiting for a technician to draw Bonilla’s blood in a mobile phlebotomy van, the officer noted “a strong odor of an intoxicating beverage” coming from Bonilla’s breath.

The officer booked Bonilla into the Clark County Detention Center. His probable cause hearing was canceled as he paid a surety bond, records said.

Bonilla was due to return to court in July. The Department of Public Safety placed him on administrative duty pending the investigation, a spokesperson said.

The 8 News Now Investigators first asked the Department of Public Safety, which oversees the Dignitary Protection Detail, about the incident on Saturday.

A booking photo was not immediately available.
