Las Vegas man fired gun 12 times in neighborhood while waiting for ex-girlfriend to come home

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A Las Vegas man faces four counts of assault with a deadly weapon after police said he fired a gun 12 times in a neighborhood while waiting for his ex-girlfriend to get home, documents said.

On Sunday, Feb. 18 at around 3 p.m., a ShotSpotter indicated twelve rounds were fired in a redacted location, according to the arrest report.

Officers with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department arrived and spoke with a victim who said she and her family were driving home when they saw a man standing in the middle of the street with a firearm, the report stated.

The victim told police her husband attempted to drive around the suspect who was “blocking the street.” The suspect then confronted the family and pointed his gun at them, according to the report.

The victims said they were able to drive around the man and heard a gunshot go off after they got past him. They did not find any impact from the gunshot on the vehicle.

Other witnesses later heard 11 more gunshots in the area.

A witness at the scene told police that she saw her daughter’s ex-boyfriend, identified as David Apodaca, 26, outside of her home before the shots were fired, the report stated. She said Apodaca and his friend told her they were looking for her daughter.

She told police she told Apodaca and his friend that her daughter was not there. Apodaca’s friend told police that Apodaca “got visibly upset” and “began reaching for his waistband as if he had a gun,” before telling the friend to leave, the report stated.

A records check on Apodaca showed that he attempted to break into his ex-girlfriend’s home after they broke up and during the incident, Apodaca battered three LVMPD officers. Court documents also show Apodaca has a lengthy criminal history, including DUI and assault with the use of a deadly weapon.

Police arrested Apodaca on Feb. 23. He was being held at the Clark County Detention Center on a $54,000 bail. He faces charges of four counts of assault with a deadly weapon, owning or possessing a gun as a prohibited person, 12 counts of discharging a gun where a person might be endangered, and violation of probation.

His next court appearance was scheduled for March. 4.
