LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – A Las Vegas judge has set bail for a woman accused of a deadly bus stop crash that took place on Wednesday night.

Cynthia Phelps, 64, appeared in court on Thursday where her bail was set at $500,000. She faces several charges including DUI, resulting in death, and failing to drive on the right half of the roadway.

Her court appearance was just one day after police said five people were hit at an RTC bus stop along Boulder Highway near Sahara Avenue. A 42-year-old man and 14-year-old boy died at the scene of the crash and a 41-year-old woman was listed in critical condition, two other children were also injured, according to Las Vegas Metro police.

In court on Thursday, prosecutors alleged that Phelps drove 65 mph at the time of the incident and then attempted to drive away.

On Wednesday night, police told 8 News Now the driver of a white four-door sedan had been driving in the wrong direction just after 7:30 p.m. in the 3600 block of Boulder Highway. The driver was seen traveling in the southbound lane going north just moments before the bus stop crash.

“These sorts of occurrences are happening far too often in our community, it seems as though they’re happening every week,” Clark County District Attorney’s Office Chief Deputy Brian Kochevar said.

On Thursday, 8 News Now spoke with several people near the scene of the crash.

“I’m going to take the bus, but I’m not going to sit down no more. I’m going to stand around here and be far,” Dilma Bruge said.

A man who was getting ready to take the bus Thursday afternoon said he wished there were barriers to protect people from vehicles.

“All these cars are unpredictable, so you kind of never know what’s going on really,” Raymond Elliot told 8 News Now.

Las Vegas Metro police said the two deaths marked the 49th and 50th traffic-related fatalities in its jurisdiction since the start of the year, compared to 34 in 2023.

Phelps is expected back in court on Tuesday, April 23.
