Las Vegas family escapes second-story apartment fire with help from neighbors

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – A Las Vegas family of four escaped a fire burning in their second-story apartment last week, crediting neighbors and nearby good Samaritans for help saving their lives.

It was a surreal situation as flames tore through a southwest valley apartment complex just after midnight on May 9.

“I’m like okay we have to get out of here,” Jazmine Ramzy recalled. “We’ve got to make it.”

Ramzy, her husband, and their two toddlers escaped their second-story unit in the middle of the night and shared with 8 News Now the minute they knew something was horribly wrong.

“I heard people yelling and throwing rocks at our window,” Ramzy recalled. “And they were screaming, ‘fire!'”

Ramzy’s neighbors and even some stopping on the side of the road woke them up, as she said her husband tried to open the front door so they could run out the front door.

“He opened the door,” she said. “And the flames were rushing into our apartment.”

This left them with one option; to jump off their balcony, as a group of people stood by to catch them seconds before their roof collapsed.

“I hear Vegas Strong all the time,” Ramzy said. “But this situation really showed me how strong Vegas really is.”

Remarkably, no one was hurt, but everything the family owned was lost in the blaze, so they now have to focus on rebuilding.

“I do need assistance,” she said. “It’s like from there I can build, I can ask for help, I can call on the village.”

However, more than anything, Ramzy said she is still blown away by the selfless actions of strangers who saved her entire family.

“I may never even see them again,” she concluded. “And I’m just eternally grateful forever.”

Ramzy told 8 News Now her family had smoke detectors in her unit, but they had taken them down to change the batteries a few days before the fire, so they were not working.

GoFundMe account and an Amazon wishlist have been set up to help the family rebuild.
