Las Cruces High School student dies in crash on way to volleyball tournament

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (KRQE) – A 14-year-old Las Cruces High School student passed away as the result of a car crash that occurred on Friday, March 1, according to Las Cruces Public Schools. Samantha Bursum was on her way to a club volleyball tournament in Midland, Texas when the accident took place.

The ninth-grader played volleyball for Las Cruces High School, was involved in student government and marching band, and took advanced placement classes. The district’s superintendent, Ignacio Ruiz, provided the following statement regarding Bursum’s death:

“Our hearts are with the Bursum family and the Bulldawg community. Right now, we are focused on how to best support them in their grief. We are devastated by this loss and send our love to Samantha’s family, including her older sister, who was also one of our LCPS students.”
