Sheriff: Deputy shoots at armed men during traffic stop involving rideshare vehicle in Pine Hills

A deputy shot at two armed men during a traffic stop Friday morning in the Pine Hills neighborhood, Orange County Sheriff John Mina said.

Mina said the deputy conducted a traffic stop on a rideshare vehicle at about 11:45 a.m. near Balboa Drive and North Pine Hills Road.

He said one of the passengers jumped through the vehicle’s rear window armed with a gun, and a deputy fired one shot at that person. That person was captured shortly thereafter.

The other passenger fled from the vehicle but was captured after a brief search, Mina said.

Another gun was discovered at the scene. Mina said that the guns were modified to be automatic.

No one was injured in the shooting, which is being investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

The deputy who fired his weapon has been with the agency for nine years.

He has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is typical in shootings involving law enforcement officers.
