The LAPD Says It's Not Investigating Brad Pitt for Child Abuse

From Harper's BAZAAR

Update, 11:30 AM: After news broke this morning that Brad Pitt is under investigation for child abuse, the LAPD responded with a statement saying that isn't true.

"LAPD is not handling any report or allegations into child abuse for Mr. Brad Pitt," the LAPD told Us Weekly in a statement today.

"We don't have anything on Brad Pitt right now. We have confirmed with the detectives, and according to our detectives there are no active investigations regarding Brad Pitt," the Public Information Officer of the police department added.

The Hollywood Reporter announced similar news. Sgt. Barry Montgomery of the LAPD told the publication:

"We have no criminal investigation that we are actively pursuing. To my knowledge, [Pitt talking to police] never happened. And right now, that is where our office is. We are not investigating any case, nor do we have any allegations against Mr. Pitt. We understand how rumors get spun up and hopefully we can put a few of them to rest. We have no investigation involving Mr. Pitt."

Meanwhile, the Department of Children and Family services says it is not legally allowed to confirm or deny any investigation at all, according to a statement from spokesman Armand Montiel, USA Today reports.

Original post, 8:50 AM: Brad Pitt is currently under investigation for child abuse allegations, reports TMZ, which broke the story on Pitt's divorce from Angelina Jolie on Tuesday. The news was confirmed by People.

The LAPD and L.A. County Department of Children and Family Services are investigating the actor for "allegedly getting verbally abusive and physical with his children," which is what caused Jolie to file for divorce, according to the site.

The incident in question reportedly took place last Wednesday, Sept. 14 (the divorce documents declare Jolie and Pitt's separation on Sept. 15). The family was traveling on a private jet, when Pitt got drunk and started "screaming and getting physical with the kids," according to TMZ. Pitt apparently continued this behavior after the plane landed, and an anonymous witness on the tarmac reported the case to the Dept. of Children and Family Services, according to People.

The site also reports that Pitt and Jolie have both already been interviewed by the DCFS, and the children are expected to be interviewed next.

When news originally broke of the couple's unexpected separation on Tuesday, statements included that Jolie was filing for divorce "for the health of the family" and "for the best interest of taking care of her children, according to her attorney and manager, respectively.

Jolie cited irreconcilable differences for filing for divorce, and sources stated that she was unhappy with Pitt's parenting skills, TMZ originally reported. She also requested sole custody of their six children: Maddox, 15, Pax, 12, Zahara, 11, Shiloh, 10, Knox, 8, and Vivienne, 8.

Though no other details were confirmed at the time, there were rumors that Pitt's alcohol and weed consumption and anger problem caused them to separate.
