6 News obtained police radio recordings from the website broadcastify.com from the time of the shooting. An officer can be heard saying, “I’ve been shot in the leg! Still fighting with him.” In the audio officers talk about taking this injured officer to the hospital followed by another radio call about a second officer also being shot in the leg.

The audio — embedded below — is edited and in chronological order, but it is not in real-time and covers approximately 15 minutes.

The officers were shot with a gun that had been wrestled away from a detective, Lansing Police Chief Ellery Sosebee said in a news conference on the day the shooting took place.

The suspect is Andrial Ched Ortiz, 28.

“LPD and my Administration do our best to provide information to the public, while ensuring the integrity of the investigation by MSP. Today’s video release provides a visual understanding of the situation to the public,” Lansing Mayor Andy Schor said in a statement to 6 News. “I thank our police officers for protecting us and keeping our community safe, and I know they never want to have to draw their weapons or return fire. Chief Sosebee and his team will continue to work with the MSP on this investigation and with our County Prosecutor John Dewayne on any criminal charges that could come from this incident.

“As this remains an active investigation being conducted by the Michigan State Police, I applaud the Lansing Police Department’s efforts to be as transparent as possible. The City of Lansing and the LPD are one of, if not the most, transparent police agencies in mid-Michigan. Providing as much information as possible during an active shooting investigation is important and we are proud to continue this work so the public has access to as much as we are allowed to share in a timely manner.”

Sosebee says the 28-year-old suspect was under investigation by detectives related to a violent crime earlier this week. The detectives asked uniformed officers to conduct a traffic stop with the suspect.

After a discussion with the suspect, the uniform officers attempted to take the man into custody. Sosebee says the man tried to flee, but officers and the detectives stopped him and a “struggle ensued.”

During the struggle, the suspect “disarmed one of the detectives,” Sosebee says. The suspect then used the gun to shoot the uniformed officers. Officers returned fire, striking the suspect.
