Lanes of 680 close this weekend in San Ramon

(KRON) — Lanes of Interstate 680 will close this weekend in San Ramon, beginning Friday, May 17 at 9 p.m. and lasting through Monday. This weekend’s partial closure is one of two consecutive weekend closures, with another set for Friday, May 31 through Monday, June 3.

The partial closures for this weekend and next will impact southbound 680 between Alcosta Boulevard in San Ramon and the I-580/I-680 connector in Pleasanton, according to Caltrans. In both closures, three left lanes of southbound I-680 will close between Alcosta and the 580/680 Connector.

The roadways will reopen at 4 a.m. the following Mondays. During the closures, two right lanes of I-680 will remain open. Drivers are nonetheless advised to take alternative routes to minimize traffic congestion within the work zone on southbound 680 in San Ramon and Dublin.

Additional closures will impact the far-left lane (Express Lane) and left shoulder on northbound I-680 between Amador Valley Boulevard in Dublin and Alcosta Boulevard in San Ramon.

“Though lanes will be open, it’s best to avoid the area if possible,” Caltrans said. “If you do access the freeway, please be aware of construction vehicles entering and exiting the construction zone and slow for the Cone Zone.”

During the weekend road closures, new pavement will be laid on southbound I-680.

The following detours will be in effect for the closures:

  • Drivers heading west on I-80 in Vacaville and Fairfield will remain on I-80 to southbound I-880

  • Drivers on southbound I-680 near the Benicia Bridge can take I-780 west to I-80 to southbound I-880

  • Drivers on southbound I-680 in Concord can take Highway 4 to I-80 to southbound I-880

  • Drivers on southbound I-680 in Walnut Creek can take Highway 4 to I-80 to southbound I-880

  • Full shutdown locations: Southbound Saint Patrick Way onramp onto southbound I0680

  • Lane closure locations (not full closure): 3 left lanes closed on southbound I-680 between Alcosta in San Ramon and I-580/I-680 connector in Dublin; far left lane (Express Lane) and left shoulder closed on northbound I-680 between Amador Valley Boulevard in Dublin and Alcosta Boulevard in San Ramon

The consecutive weekend road closures will repair deteriorating existing pavement and enhance motorist safety, Caltrans said. They will also reduce the number of nightly closures needed on each project. Each weekend closure will accomplish the amount of work that would otherwise require around 40 nighttime closures.

Closures for both weekends are weather dependent.
