Lane Kiffin has $1M clause in contract if FAU has three-straight top-10 seasons

Lane Kiffin is already a very rich man. He can be an even richer man if he takes Florida Atlantic to three-straight top-10 seasons.

The contract extension Kiffin and Florida Atlantic agreed to after the 2017 season is now official and according to the Palm Beach Post, Kiffin can make $1 million if FAU has three-straight top-10 seasons.

The odds of FAU doing that are pretty low given how hard it is for Group of Five teams to break into the top 10. And, to be frank, the odds of Kiffin being there all three years if that happens are really low. If FAU finishes in the top 10 after just one season then Kiffin is probably off to a Power Five school for a second big-time head coaching chance in college football.

According to the Post, Kiffin’s base salary of $950,000 is unchanged from his original deal at Florida Atlantic. He signed to be the team’s head coach in the leadup to the College Football Playoff after the 2016 season. Kiffin was Alabama’s offensive coordinator for the Peach Bowl but parted ways with the school before the National Championship Game.

FAU went 11-3 in Kiffin’s first season with the school. His contract extension takes him through the 2027 season and his presence at the school throughout the entirety of the contract is another one of those things with a very low probability.

When Kiffin originally agreed to the contract extension with FAU, the school’s president said out-of-state applications to FAU had gone up over 30 percent without a change in admissions strategy from the school.

According to USA Today’s salary database, Kiffin was the third-highest paid coach in Conference USA in 2017 and No. 81 among coaches at public universities.
