Lakeland man called 911 after shooting husband 10 times, police say

LAKELAND, Fla. (WFLA) — A Lakeland man was arrested after he shot his husband dead Thursday night, police said.

The Lakeland Police Department said Gavin Miranda, 27, called officers to his home on Village Center Drive at 9:21 p.m. after he shot his husband, 30-year-old Hugo Gomez.

According to an arrest affidavit, Miranda said he and his husband were having “marital issues,” but that night, their fights turned physical for the first time. The suspect told the 911 operator that Gomez pushed him into a wall and started choking him, so he went for a gun and fired every bullet in the magazine at his husband.

First responders found the victim lying face down on the living room floor. Investigators said Gomez was shot only once in the front of his body, but the nine other shots were fired into the victim’s back while he was on the floor.

The affidavit also stated the nine bullet holes were found in the victim’s back continued into the floor, which detectives said “clearly means the victim was defenseless.”

Miranda was charged with first-degree murder. Police say if you know anything related to the murder investigation, you can email Detective Neal Robertson at neal.robertson@lakelandgov.net or call 863-834-6971.
