Lake Yosemite reopens, reason for closure revealed

MERCED COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Lake Yosemite on UC’s Merced Campus is back open, the Merced County Sheriff’s Office announced on Thursday.

This comes after deputies announced on Monday that the lake would be closed as a “precautionary measure” for the events that were taking place on campus.

According to deputies, due to the recent events at college campuses across the nation and the large law enforcement presence at the University, they felt it was necessary to close the lake.

Deputies say that the rivers in Merced County are still closed due to rising water levels and swift undercurrents.

Officials say the public should enjoy the water safely this summer by wearing personal floatation devices and limiting alcohol consumption if planning to be in the water.
