Lake Huron Medical Center has been recognized as a 2024 Patient Safety Excellence Award recipient.

The award comes from Healthgrades, a resource people use to find a hospital or doctor. In addition to the award, Lake Huron Medical Center was also named among the top 5% in the nation for patient safety for the sixth year in a row.

"Lake Huron Medical Center has cultivated an outstanding safety culture that prioritizes the well-being of both patients and staff, setting a high standard for patient safety nationwide," said Brad Bowman, MD, chief medical officer, and head of data science at Healthgrades.

He said Healthgrades is proud to recognize Lake Huron Medical Center for providing top-quality medical care while also preventing patient injury.

Other recognition Lake Huron Medical Center has recently earned includes The Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval for Stroke Certification and being a Healthgrades Five-Star Recipient for the following categories:

  • Treatment of pneumonia (2021-24)

  • Gallbladder removal surgery (2021-24)

  • Treatment of diabetic hospitalizations (2023-24)

Lake Huron Medical Center CEO Jose Kottoor said the medical center is thrilled to be named in the top 5% in the nation for patient safety excellence.

"This is a testament to the dedication of our physicians, leaders and staff and the ongoing commitment we have to provide quality health services and procedures to our community," he said.

Healthgrades evaluated risk-adjusted complication and mortality rates for approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide to determine this year's top-performing hospitals for patient safety.

Its analysis revealed that patients treated in hospitals receiving the 2024 Patient Safety Excellence Award have significantly lower chance of experiencing in-hospital falls resulting in fracture, collapsed lungs from procedure or surgeries, pressure sores or catheter-related infections.
