AUSTIN (KXAN) — Lago Vista High School was placed on lockdown Wednesday after what Lago Vista ISD called a “student self-harm situation.”

In a statement, the district said the high school was placed on lockdown after an “incident of student self harm involving a handgun.”

“We are deeply saddened to share that the student did not survive. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to the student’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time,” the statement said in part.

The district said there was no threat to other students at the school.

Other Lago Vista ISD schools were not released early; however, all after school events in the district were cancelled Wednesday.

For Thursday, Lago Vista Middle School, Lago Vista Intermediate School and Logo Vista Elementary School will all operate on a normal schedule, according to the district. Lago Vista High School will be open to students. However, the district said attendance is optional, and all absences for Thursday will be excused.

“All remaining final examinations will be exempted. However, any student wishing to take a final exam due to the positive impact it may have on their grade should contact their teacher to make arrangements,” the statement said.
