Lack of flora can lead to greater flooding chances

GHENT, WV (WVNS) — Flooding can be more serious during winter months due to that lack of vegetation on the ground.

From the top down, trees are the best natural way to prevent flooding.

According to the Woodland Trust, a conservation group out of the United Kingdom, canopy cover can reduce the speed at which rain hits the ground and allows some of the water to evaporate back into the atmosphere before it ever reaches the ground.

Root systems are also important. They allow for better water penetration into the soil which means less surface run-off and more water storage in the ground around the trees.
