La Mesa-Spring Valley School District honors dozens for brave acts during historic flooding

LA MESA, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) – The La Mesa-Spring Valley school district took time to honor those who went above and beyond during historic flooding on Jan. 22.

“Tonight is a special night. It was really kicked off by something that was very hard and traumatic for a lot of people,” Superintendent David Feliciano said.

Monday’s school board meeting featured a room full of heroes from the district who jumped into action when students needed it the most.

“Everybody stepped up without even having to be asked,” said Nathan Saucedo, principal at Bancroft Elementary.

Countless district employees were recognized along with staff from three schools including Avondale Elementary, Kempton Literacy Academy and the most impacted Bancroft Elementary, which saw damage in every classroom.

One of the custodians honored was Angel Serrano from Bancroft.

Serrano stayed to help students, even as his own home flooded nearby.

After shifting to nearby Spring Valley Academy for about a month, students returned to Bancroft Elementary at the end of February to classrooms that look brand new.

Another special honor at Monday’s meeting was fourth grader Sonja Hans, who presented the district with $800 that she fundraised while selling handmade bracelets for Bancroft.
