LA Mayor calls for divestment from gun makers

Los Angeles Mayor calls on city pension programs to divest from gun manufacturers

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is asking several city pension programs to end their investments in corporations that manufacture firearms, ammunition or high-capacity ammunition magazines.

The mayor sent a letter Wednesday to the Department of Water and Power, Los Angeles City Employee Retirement System and the Los Angeles Fire and Police Pensions.

Villaraigosa says he wants LA to stop investing in companies that put military-grade weapons on city streets.

He says the recommendations come in response to the deadly shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School, and many other lives that have been lost in Los Angeles.

Villaraigosa met with local law enforcement officials and gun safety advocates earlier Wednesday to discuss other possible measures to deter gun violence.
