La Loche, Sask., man facing murder, attempted murder and arson charges

A La Loche, Sask., man has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder following the discovery of two people in a burning home.

In a news release issued Thursday afternoon, Saskatchewan RCMP said officers in the northern village were told about an altercation there at approximately 2:30 Wednesday morning.

RCMP said when officers arrived at the home, they saw smoke and flames.

Officers searched the structure, and found two injured people —Brenda Toulejour, 52, and an unidentified 82-year-old man.

Toulejour, was pronounced dead at the La Loche hospital, police said, and the man was taken to hospital in Saskatoon. There has been no update on his condition.

In addition to second-degree murder and attempted murder, Marty Keith Toulejour, 49, is also charged with arson and aggravated assault, RCMP said.

Toulejour made a court appearance in La Loche on Thursday.

According to the release, police agencies in North Battleford, Meadow Lake and Prince Albert helped in the investigation. Fire departments from La Loche and the Clearwater River Dene Nation put out the fire.

Police said the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency was also deployed.
