FOX CROSSING - Real estate agent Kyle Kehoe announced he is running as Democratic candidate for Assembly District 55 hoping to unseat Republican incumbent Nate Gustafson.

The Winneconne native is hoping to bring a "fresh perspective" to the district, which covers areas of Grand Chute, Fox Crossing, Omro and Nekimi.

"I am ready to take the next step to be your Assembly representative," Kehoe said in a statement. "My goal is to create common-sense legislation which empowers and supports the people of the 55th district."

Kehoe, who said he's worked as a police officer and serves on the town of Algoma Planning & Zoning Commission, is running on a platform of pushing for affordable housing, restoring reproductive rights and empowering worker unions.

Kehoe's campaign announcement provides the first Democratic challenge to freshman representative Gustafson, who announced he would seek reelection to his district in February.

With the passage of new electoral maps this year, 55th Assembly District boundaries shifted significantly. The district used to cover Neenah and stretch west but now the district stretches south beyond Oshkosh and loses Neenah.

Because of the new maps, Assembly District 53 incumbent Michael Schraa, R-Oshkosh, now lives within the 55th district and plans to run against Gustafson in the Aug. 13 Republican primary.

Schraa has served in the Assembly since 2012 and is chair of the Committee on Corrections, while Gustafson also serves on the Winnebago County Board and recently was endorsed by former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy.

Barring other Democratic candidates entering the race, Kehoe will face the winner of the Republican primary in the Nov. 5 general election.

New candidates can begin circulating nomination papers for elected office on April 15. They must gather between 200 and 400 signatures and return nomination papers by 5 p.m. June 3.
