Kyiv to request Ukraine-NATO Council meeting on air defense — Zelenskyy

Kyiv will convene a meeting of the Ukraine-NATO Council to discuss assistance the country can get to better protect its airspace from Russian attacks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his April 16 evening address.

“We are seeking increased and more effective [allied] assistance,” said Zelenskyy.

“True parity in defense against terror is our goal, so that the same standards apply to all of us — in Ukraine, across Europe, and the world — in the face of similar acts of terror and the same threats from rockets and drones,” the president added, alluding to Iran’s recent attack on Israel.

Zelenskyy noted that Israel and Ukraine face similar threats from Iran and Russia, respectively, saying that both countries deserve equal efforts from allies to help defend themselves.

“Ukraine will request a meeting of the Ukraine-NATO Council to talk about protecting our skies and the supply of anti-aircraft defense systems, including the necessary systems and missiles,” he added.

EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell previously indicated that EU members should buy anti-aircraft systems if they can't supply them from their inventories to aid Ukraine.
