[1] South Valley charter school director accused of holding box cutter to student’s neck – A warrant was issued for Richard Perea, accused of holding a boxcutter to a students neck. Perea is the executive director of South Valley Academy charter school. According to court documents, the student was accused of vaping in the school’s bathroom. During a search a boxcutter was found in the student’s pocket. The student said it was for ranch work after school and agreed to let security take it. Perea then allegedly wrapped his arm around the student’s neck and holding the box cutter up to his neck.

[2] Video shows moments after inmate is accused of trying to escape transport – According to a criminal complaint, on April 17 a corrections officer was transporting Gabriel Sanchez when Sanchez rolled down the window and tried to escape. While trying to get the inmate under control the officer hit two other cars, including another officer who was driving into work. The off duty officer was able to subdue Sanchez until backup arrived and he was taken into custody.

[3] Cloudier and stormier weekend around New Mexico – Skies will be mostly sunny across the state today, but clouds will pop up during the afternoon. A few showers and thunderstorms will be possible in the northeast highlands. Saturday, more clouds will move into the state, keeping skies partly cloudy. Thunderstorms will develop in southeast and east-central New Mexico during the afternoon. Sunday will be a partly cloudy, warm and breezy day. Winds will pick up to around 30-45 mph across the state.

[4] Petroglyphs National Monument opening new trail system – Petroglyphs National Monument is opening a new trail area. The National Park Service is opening the South Point Day Use Area, located near Arroyo Vista Blvd. There will be an opening ceremony from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 3 and Saturday, May 4. NPS will offer guided hikes at 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.

[5] Volcano Vista High School teacher wins Golden Apple Award – Desiree Sers, a Volcano Vista High School forensic science teacher, was surprised with the Golden Apple Award Thursday. The award is given to seven New Mexico teachers each year by the Golden Apple Foundation. Teachers who demonstrate classroom excellence, professional commitment, and a desire to elevate education are nominated and then voted on by students and faculty.
