Wednesday’s Five Facts

[1] Documents reveal when Albuquerque police investigated DWI unit tip – Documents show that in December 2022, the department’s Investigative Services Division started looking into a complaint of DWI officers taking money to get DWI cases dropped. Tuesday night, APD confirmed the caller said officers were getting tipped by workers at three bars or restaurants in the Northeast Heights about patrons leaving those establishments. APD looked at officer’s activity around those locations and found no correlation to traffic stops. an APD spokesman says without corroborating evidence and concerned about tipping off officers, APD tabled the investigation. In January 2024, it became public that the FBI was investigating APD DWI officers. No officers have been charged in connection with the scandal.

[2] Suspect identified in connection to attack on 3 people in downtown Albuquerque – Crime Stoppers and Albuquerque Police are searching for Brian Eisenbeis, 43, in connection to two separate attacks in downtown Albuquerque on April 10. According to the arrest warrant for Eisenbeis, he reportedly attacked two men outside the St. John’s Thrift Shop around noon. The second attack involved a woman running near 12th and Silver when a truck ran a stop sign. Documents state the truck stopped and waved for her to gross. She said she was afraid, then Eisenbeis got out of the truck and attacked her. Eisenbeis was driving a red pickup truck with the Arizona license plate “EPA88K” during the attacks.

[3] Hot, quiet day before wind storm arrives – Temperatures will be warmer than normal again, staying the 70s, 80s and 90s. A light breeze of 15 to 30 mph is expected this afternoon. Much windier weather will arrive Thursday. A storm moving past New Mexico on Thursday will bring 40 to 60 mph wind gusts across the state. Temperatures will start to cool down on Thursday through the Saturday.

[4] NMDOT hosting public meeting on ‘S-curve’ portion of Albuquerque I-25 – The New Mexico Department of Transportation will host a meeting Wednesday April 24, CNM’s Smith Brasher Hall from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The meeting will be on NMDOT’s plans to fix the I-25 “S-Curve”, a notoriously dangerous stretch of freeway just south of the Big-I.

[5] ABQ BioPark getting new upgrades – Improvements are under construction at the BioPark. In progress projects include a renovation to Heritage Farm, including a new train at the site. An event pavilion at the Botanic Garden is on the way. The alligator snapping turtles are getting a larger pool. Improvements to the Mexican gray wolf habitat will give the wolves some space for privacy. The privacy space will let wolves breed, raise pups, and establish bonds. A handful of other projects are on the agenda, but will likely take longer to complete. The projects are funded by a gross receipt tax approved in 2016.
