Kochi delegation to come to Fresno for historic sisterhood

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Guests from the Japanese delegation from Kochi, Japan, will be visiting Fresno to celebrate 60 years of Sister City’s relationship, officials with the Sister Cities International of Fresno announced.

“I am truly honored to serve as the City of Fresno’s liaison to the distinguished delegation from Kochi, Japan, Fresno’s longest standing Sister City relationship,” said Fresno Councilmember Nelson Esparza. “The Japanese culture has influenced Fresno’s growth in numerous ways and our relationship with Kochi demonstrates our commitment to sustaining such a strong relationship.”

Officials say guests from Kochi include Ms. Mina Kamiya, Kochi City Deputy Mayor, Mr. Takashi Ohkubo, Kochi City Council Deputy Chair, Mr. Shinichi Satake, Sister City Chair and a renowned pop singer and songwriter from Kochi, Ms. Umi. They are visiting Fresno to reaffirm both cities’ historic sisterhood and celebrate the 60th anniversary of their international collaboration.

According to officials, the delegation will meet at the Fresno City Hall, visit the Fresno Chaffee, and explore Fresno’s Shinzen Garden, a place that was founded as an early Sister-City Garden and a connection to Kochi city.

Sister International of Fresno invites Fresno residents and supporters to a welcome banquet honoring the delegation and featuring a performance by Ms. Umi. The banquet will be held on May 14 from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Pardini’s Catering and Banquets located at 2257 West Shaw Avenue in Fresno.
