Koala With Diabetes Gets Its Own Glucose Monitor
A koala with diabetes at the San Diego Zoo has been fitted with his very own monitor to keep tabs on his blood glucose levels.
Quincy, who suffers from Type 1 diabetes, now wears a sensor and transmitter, created by Dexcom, which then sends information to a smart device monitored by his caretakers.
They're hoping the technology works as well with koalas as it already does with humans so that Quincy no longer has to get his skin pricked to check his levels.
It also has built-in alerts to notify caretakers before his blood glucose levels reach dangerous levels.
Diabetes is reportedly extremely rare among koalas, which makes a blood glucose monitor all the more important.
