What to know when heading to Shaver Lake on Memorial Day Weekend

FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – While everyone will be having fun in the sun at the lake Memorial Day Weekend, the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office will be out in full force.

“Our main concern is boating safety and water safety especially here at Shaver Lake,” said Deputy Eric Unruh

Unruh says because of the holiday weekend patrols, will be keeping an eye out for any boaters who have been drinking.

“Alcohol can be a big contributing factor to accidents, tragedies, and drownings so we want to mitigate any kinds of hazards that come up,” Unruh said.

He also says patrols will be watching the shores with swimmers in the water.

“Know how to swim, don’t go in the water we get folks that walk out and they won’t realize ‘Hey it’s gonna drop off’,” said Unruh.

With the cold water temperatures, Unruh says the best way people can protect themselves and their families is by wearing a life jacket anytime they are in the water.

“With temperatures being cold and people in the water we can get hypothermia, fatigue is going to get in a lot quicker,” Unruh explained.

Another danger deputies say boaters and swimmers need to look out for rocks and debris hidden by the lake’s high water.

Deputies will continue patrols at Shaver Lake always through Labor Day weekend.
