How do you know it’s almost Easter in Rock Hill? 35,000 eggs are waiting in Cherry Park
It must be close to Easter in South Carolina, because on Thursday hundreds of kids are expected to race for 35,000 eggs in Rock Hill.
The 40th “Great Easter Egg Classic” at Cherry Park is a free event so huge organizers say it is believed to be among the largest egg hunts in the state. Runs by age start at 1:30 p.m. at Cherry Park, located at 1466 Cherry Road. The event is open to the public, and gates open at 12:45 p.m.
WRHI-AM puts on the egg hunt with help from many sponsors and volunteers, said Allan Miller of OTS Media Group. OTS operates WRHI and other stations.
Children ages 2 to 11 are allowed to participate in runs for the plastic eggs. Many of the eggs have tickets for prizes inside that can be redeemed on-site, Miller said.
Bags are provided. No Easter baskets or outside bags are allowed.
The Easter egg hunt started in 1983 and only missed two years because of the COVID pandemic, Miller said. In the 1990s, the classic sought recognition from the Guinness Book of World Records when more than 130,000 eggs were used.
