Here’s what to know ahead of Topeka area high school graduations

TOPEKA (KSNT) – This weekend will be full of festivities as high school graduates across the Capital City walk the stage. The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office has advice to make all six ceremonies at the Stormont Vail Event Center run smoothly.

This weekend, the Stormont Vail Event Center will host six graduation ceremonies for high schools in Shawnee County. Saturday, May 18, there will be three ceremonies: Topeka West High School’s graduation will start at 9 a.m., Highland Park High School’s ceremony will take place at 11:30 a.m. and Topeka High School will start it’s graduation at 2 p.m.

On Sunday, May 19, Shawnee Heights High School will start its ceremony at 11 a.m., Seaman High School’s graduation ceremony will kick off at 2 p.m. and Auburn Washburn’s graduation will start at 5:30 p.m. According to a spokeswoman with the Stormont Vail Event Center, doors will open to the public one hour before the start of each ceremony.

A traffic plan is in place for Sunday’s ceremonies. A spokeswoman with The Stormont Vail Event Center told 27 News a majority of traffic is expected to enter from Topeka Boulevard, but both entrances at Topeka Boulevard and Southwest 21st Street will be open.

The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office posted on social media it encourages attendees going to the Stormont Vail Event Center for graduation ceremonies Sunday to enter from Southwest 21st Street and exit southbound onto Southwest Topeka Boulevard.

Visitors are encouraged to be careful of what they pack to attend the graduation ceremonies. According to the Stormont Vail Event Center’s website, you can only bring certain bags and water bottles into the event center that meat the criteria.
