New kitchen at The Station assists entrepreneurs

Mar. 11—The Station, Terre Haute's remote workspace inside The Hub at 900 Wabash Ave., now has a facility that can help culinary entrepreneurs.

It offers a working commissary kitchen that meets health department standards. Renovation was made possible by a $30,000 Wabash Valley Community Foundation grant.

The target audience includes food truck owners who lack prep space in their mobile units; caterers who do not have a fixed location; pop-up restaurants and bakers who primarily sell at traveling markets.

Many of these entities need a full-time physical kitchen space. However, these businesses are usually required by the local health department to operate out of a licensed commercial kitchen, according to a news release.

"Terre Haute really loves our eateries and I think this will be a great option for having a cost effective way to really kickstart their business," said Lindsey English, The Station director of membership engagement.

The Station, a business hub for remote workers, entrepreneurs, chefs and the community, is located in the former Clabber Girl Museum and Bake Shop.

The commissary kitchen has a six-burner stove/oven; a charbroil grill; combi oven; multiple refrigeration units; and other equipment.

"Food entrepreneurs starting out are needing to make multiple investments in their products and we offer a cost effective way" to provide access to commercial kitchen space they can use, English said.

The Station has already had several people reach out, with a few wanting to book the space immediately, English said.

The community foundation grant helped with renovation of the space and bringing it up to code with the health department, English said.

Those using the commissary kitchen must be Station members and membership is $70 per month.

Station members can then rent the commissary kitchen for $25 per hour.

Beth Tevlin, president and CEO of the Wabash Valley Community Foundation, said the facility provides local culinary entrepreneurs with access to a commercial kitchen.

She added, "I think this is a fabulous re-use of a great, historically significant building" that helps entrepreneurs develop their businesses. The building formerly housed Hulman and Co.

Those entrepreneurs also have the ability to interact with other business startups and leaders in the business community that are now located at 900 Wabash Ave., including the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce, Tevlin said.
