For Kirstie Alley, John Travolta was the one who got away, but ultimately it was for the best.

The actress, 67, continues to publicly discuss her love for her Look Who’s Talking co-star — and fellow Scientologist. During an interview on Dan Wootton’s podcast, which aired Monday, she spoke more about the emotional affair she had with Travolta in the late ’80s and early ’90s, when they were making their movie trilogy. At the time, she was hitched to now ex-husband, Baywatch‘s Parker Stevenson. By 1993, when the final film came out, Travolta was married to Kelly Preston.

“It wasn’t a sexual relationship because I’m not going to cheat on my husband,” Alley said of her affair of the heart with the Grease star. “But you know I think there are things that are way worse than sexual relationships, than cheating on someone that way. Because I consider what I did even worse because I actually let myself fall in love with him and stay in love with him for a long time.”

Although they are now “best friends” and she’s best friends with Preston as well (they live next door to each other), things were different back then. “He had dated [Kelly] before he did Look Who’s Talking with me. I would say that he would agree it was mutual that we sort of fell in love with each other. When it became very apparent I wasn’t going anywhere — I was staying married — he started seeing Kelly again. He said: ‘What do you think?’ I said, ‘I think you should marry her. I think she’s terrific. I think she’s amazing. She loves you, you love her.’ Blah, blah, blah. Not that he wouldn’t have made this decision on his own.”

Travolta and Preston married in 1991, so that posed a little problem on the set by the time the final movie, 1993’s Look Who’s Talking Now, was filming. “We did one more movie together,” Alley recalled. “I was flirting with him — like crazy. We were in a department store filming. Flirt, flirt, flirt — and Kelly came up to me — and they were married then — and she said, ‘Um, why are you flirting with my husband?’”

“Busted,” Alley admitted. “That was sort of when I had to make a decision: Are you going to be this girl who not only is married but he’s now married. … And I made the decision and that was pretty much the end of that.” She called it “one of the hardest decisions I had to make because I was madly in love with him.”

That led to Alley being asked if she believes the rumors, which have been going around for “years and years and years,” that “John is gay.” Alley replied, “No, I don’t. I know him pretty well, and I know the love.”

Alley said that it’s for the best that she ended up being friends with Travolta anyway. “John and I are definitely kindred spirits, but John and I would have devoured each other because John and I are so alike,” she said. “We would have burned out. It would be like two blazing stars that just fizzled out. … It would have been a disaster.” As for John and Kelly, they “are so beautiful together because she’s much more understanding. She’s much more even-keeled. Perfect for him.”

Last month while competing on Celebrity Big Brother, Alley said on camera that she never had full-blown affairs when she was married, but she did “kiss” two people: Travolta and her North and South co-star Patrick Swayze. She said that although she would have had an affair with Swayze, who died in 2009, he was married to Lisa Niemi so it didn’t go further. That time, she said, “I almost ran off and married John. I did love him, I still love him. If I hadn’t been married, I would have gone and married him. And I would have been in an airplane, because he has his own! Let me tell you, girls. It doesn’t seem like it’s important if someone has a private jet, but it is. As you get older, you’re not going to want to hang out in airports.”
