A Washington, D.C.-based Kirkland & Ellis litigation partner, Michael Jones, was shot while on vacation in Turks and Caicos Islands amid a suspected burglary on Friday night, according to the firm and police.

The lawyer was treated initially in Turks and Caicos, a tropical archipelago near the Bahamas, and later transported to a hospital in Hollywood, Florida, where he is was stable condition Tuesday.

The Royal Turks and Caicos Island Police described the incident in a statement on Sunday, saying officers and medical personnel responded to a house on the Turks and Caicos island of Providenciales following a report of a 57-year-old man having suffered a gunshot injury.

"Other members of the victim's family who were present suffered no physical injury but were understandably shocked and upset," the police statement said. Turks and Caicos police commissioner James Smith added that detectives on the police force's serious crimes team were leading an investigation.

"I want to reassure the public that officers are working hard to identify those responsible for this crime," Smith said in the statement.

A Kirkland representative confirmed on Tuesday that Jones was shot during the suspected burglary, saying in a statement that he has been treated and is now in stable condition.

"Mike Jones, a partner in our Washington, D.C., office, was shot during a burglary while on vacation with his family. Mike was treated successfully and is in stable condition and is expected to fully recover," the Kirkland statement said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Mike and his family, and we look forward to welcoming him back after his recovery."

In an article about the incident, ABC News reported that investigators believe at least two suspects were involved in the suspected burglary and forced their way into a private villa with a plan to rob it.

Citing comments from Smith, the police commissioner, ABC reported that it appeared Jones confronted one of the suspects inside the vacation home and a shot was fired, though it was not clear what specifically led to the shooting. Afterward, the suspects fled with a laptop they had stolen, according to ABC.

Jones is an established trial lawyer at Kirkland with a focus on defending clients against mass torts and product liability litigation, according to his firm biography.

He has also led a Kirkland pro bono team in a long-running legal battle alleging that racial inequalities have persisted in Maryland's public university system, despite the U.S. Supreme Court's 1954 ruling in Brown v. Board of Education.
