The American Federation of Teachers St. Louis says that teachers are fighting for a fair contract. A statement from a union spokesperson says the teachers are willing to agree to all of KIPP’s contract proposals, including salaries, in exchange for job security and a fair grievance procedure.

FOX 2 received this statement from a Kipp High School spokesperson Monday morning…

We are disappointed that a small group of staff represented by AFT Local 420 decided to strike at KIPP St. Louis High School on a school day.

Despite this, our team has developed coverage plans to support any impacted classrooms and ensure the school can continue instruction while limiting disruptions to our students.

We have consistently met with Local 420 and presented over 20 proposals, including substantial salary increases, and we believe ongoing negotiations should continue rather than become a distraction for our students.

We appreciate the many educators and staff who showed up and are present, supporting students today at KIPP St. Louis High School. Teachers play an invaluable role in ensuring students receive the outstanding education they deserve. We will continue negotiating in good faith until we reach a contract.
