Kingsport paving program to begin soon

KINGSPORT, Tenn. (WJHL) — Kingsport’s annual paving program is set to begin soon, the city announced Wednesday.

Paving work will take place in Fairacres, Tellico Hills and Eastern Highlands neighborhoods (Area 17), the city said in a release. The area is bound by the neighborhoods north of Watauga Street, Center Street, west of Eastman Road and east of and including Linville Street and the Watauga Street intersection.

Fairacres resident Paula Coover told News Channel 11 she was excited to hear that the city would be paving her neighborhood.

“We’re thankful we’re up,” Coover said. “We’re very happy. Everybody is. But we’ve been trying to be patient about it and we’re very thankful that the time is here.”

W&L Construction will begin paving around 1.7 miles of Tellico Hills streets this spring. The cost of the project is approximately $698,000, the city said.

Deputy City Manager Ryan McReynolds said the city chose the area based on it’s cyclical survey of roads via radar. Each road is scored from zero to 100, and the neighborhood’s average road score determines its place in the “paving queue.”

“Worst first, that we’ve already begun,” McReynolds told News Channel 11. “Those roads that my data have showed that they really need attention.”

The remaining roads in Area 17 will be repaved or the concrete surface will be repaired throughout the 2024 paving season.

McReynolds said the crews will also work on patching potholes as they’re reported to the city and on repairs to some main roads.

“We are anticipating pushing out a significant amount of main road paving this summer as well, that has been in the works,” McReynolds said.

McReynolds said it was too early to provide a list of main roads slated for resurfacing; however, he said the city has secured federal and state funding for the projects.

Kingsport reportedly allocated $3.4 million in the 2024 Fiscal Year budget for contractors and crews to pave.
