Kingsport BOE advances proposed drug testing policy

KINGSPORT, Tenn. (WJHL) — The Kingsport Board of Education approved on first reading a random drug testing policy for high school students who participate in extracurricular activities.

Under the proposed policy, extracurricular activities would include athletics, cheerleading and spirit, competitive band, clubs, student leadership positions and more.

If a student tests positive, they would not be suspended or expelled from school solely because of the positive test, according to the policy.

The superintendent would be tasked with developing a process for randomly selecting students to be tested.

During the meeting, board members discussed whether the school system could also drug test homeschooled students who participate in extracurricular activities. An attorney told the board it could not.

The board voted 4-0 to advance the proposal with board member Julie Byers absent from the meeting. The policy will have to be approved on second reading to be officially adopted and put into place.
