King Frederik and Queen Mary continued a Danish royal tradition this week, moving their official residence to the Royal Yacht Dannebrog for the summer. After they boarded the yacht, they gave their first official joint interview since King Frederik's accession in January. "It is a great pleasure to board the Dannebrog," the King told TV2. "We have embarked on our calling and our work, which symbolically happens with this action on the royal ship. It is very special."

Over the rest of the interview, the royal couple reflected on their momentous 2024. "It was very overwhelming and moving," Frederik said of stepping out on the balcony after he was proclaimed king following his mother Queen Margrethe's abdication. "I felt extremely well received. The highlight was when Mary and the children came out and stood right behind me and I had the Danes standing in front of me and waving. It was one of the most amazing things to experience in my life."

Queen Mary recalled of that morning, "I stood with the children and when you stepped out onto the balcony towards your fate, it was a moment that moved me incredibly much. We could hear and feel it, even if we couldn't see it. It was a beautiful moment. I was both very happy and very proud." Frederik and Mary have four children; their eldest, Prince Christian, is now heir to the throne of Denmark.

When asked about the future of the monarchy, Mary said, "We have not set a fixed route, but a good direction. We are going to continue the tracks we have laid. Our interest in nature and communities and business. We also want to be a royal couple who are visible and present throughout Denmark."
